5 V logic — level-shift 3.3 V peripherals

  • Selective 5V Tolerance: Most digital GPIOs are 5V tolerant (FT). However, analog ADC pins (PA0–PA7, PB0, PB1) and PC13–PC15 are strictly limited to 3.3V!
  • Back-power Risk: The 5V pin connects directly to USB Type-C VBUS without back-power isolation. Do not connect an external 5V supply while USB is attached!
  • KEY Button on PA0: User push button SW3 is wired directly to PA0, shorting to GND when pressed (active LOW).
  • USB Pins PA11/PA12: PA11 (D-) and PA12 (D+) are hardwired to the Type-C port via 22Ω damping resistors and cannot be used as general GPIO when USB is active.

Board overview

The WeAct Studio STM32F411CEU6 Black Pill is a high-performance development board featuring a 100 MHz ARM Cortex-M4F core with single-precision FPU, 512 KB Flash, 128 KB SRAM, USB Type-C connector, and a bottom SOIC-8 footprint for external SPI Flash.

Power inputs

  • USB Type-C Port: Delivers 5V (VBUS) power to the onboard 3.3V LDO and provides native Full-Speed USB OTG connectivity.
  • 5V Pins: External 5V power input. CAUTION: Tied directly to USB VBUS without an ideal diode; do not apply external 5V while USB is plugged in!
  • 3.3V Pins: Regulated 3.3V output from onboard AP7343 / ME6211 LDO (up to 300 mA), or direct 3.3V supply input.
  • VBAT Pin: Backup power domain input (1.65–3.6V) preserving RTC operation and backup registers when main power is removed.

Hardware Variants, Clones & Traps

  • F411 vs F401: STM32F411 operates at a higher 100 MHz clock (vs 84 MHz on F401) with double memory capacity (512 KB Flash / 128 KB SRAM vs 256 KB / 64 KB).
  • U3 SPI Flash Footprint: The bottom side includes unpopulated SOIC-8 pads for an external SPI Flash chip (W25Q32–W25Q128) connected to SPI1.
  • ROM DFU Bootloader: The factory ROM bootloader allows firmware flashing directly via USB Type-C without an external ST-Link programmer by holding BOOT0.

Before you wire

Safe GPIO pins

Use the pin table to distinguish 5 V-tolerant digital pins from analog and special-purpose pins limited to 3.3 V.

ADC and analog pins

ADC inputs operate in the analog supply domain and are not 5 V tolerant.

I2C, SPI and UART pins

The board exposes UART, SPI, I2C, I2S, USB, timer, and SWD signals through alternate pin functions.

Strapping and boot pins

BOOT0 controls entry to the ROM bootloader; keep it in the normal state for user flash execution.

Input-only pins

GPIO direction, alternate functions, and voltage tolerance vary by pin; consult the interactive table before wiring.
