Safe GPIO pins
Pico exposes 26 multifunction GPIO pins at fixed 3.3 V logic. Every exposed GPIO can participate in PIO and PWM according to the official pinout; select the peripheral mapping that matches your program and avoid applying 5 V to any GPIO.
ADC and analog pins
GP26, GP27 and GP28 provide ADC0, ADC1 and ADC2. ADC_VREF is the filtered ADC supply/reference and AGND is the analog ground. The datasheet warns that ADC-capable GPIO have a diode to the 3.3 V I/O rail, including when the RP2040 is unpowered.
I2C, SPI and UART pins
The pinout diagram lists several default placements for UART0/1, I2C0/1 and SPI0/1. The explorer copies those labels per pin rather than presenting one pair as universally preferred. PIO can implement additional protocols in software.
Strapping and boot pins
The 40-pin header has no ESP-style strapping GPIO. BOOTSEL is a board button rather than a main header position, while RUN is the enable/reset input and is reset by pulling it low.
Input-only pins
None of the 26 exposed GPIO is documented as input-only. RUN, 3V3_EN, ADC_VREF and the power contacts are special-purpose header pins and must not be treated as ordinary GPIO.
