TIA/EIA-232 (DE-9, DTE)
DE-9 (DB-9) Serial RS-232 Male and Female D-Sub Pinout
The nine-position D-sub connector carries the RS-232 data, handshake and ground signals of a PC serial port. Select a contact to see its signal and whether it is an input or an output at the DTE.

| Pin | Signal | Function | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| DCD | Data Carrier Detect: DCE tells the DTE it receives a valid carrier (input at the DTE) | Standard | |
| RXD | Receive Data: serial data from DCE to DTE (input at the DTE) | Standard | |
| TXD | Transmit Data: serial data from DTE to DCE (output at the DTE) | Standard | |
| DTR | Data Terminal Ready: DTE ready to communicate (output at the DTE) | Standard | |
| GND | Signal Ground: common reference for all circuits, separate from protective (chassis) ground | Standard | |
| DSR | Data Set Ready: DCE connected and ready (input at the DTE) | Standard | |
| RTS | Request To Send: DTE ready to transmit, hardware flow control (output at the DTE) | Standard | |
| CTS | Clear To Send: DCE ready to receive, hardware flow control (input at the DTE) | Standard | |
| RI | Ring Indicator: DCE signals incoming ringing (input at the DTE) | Standard |
